OpenViBE was initially made by Inria Rennes, INSERM, and Orange Labs in collaboration with AFM, CNRS, Gipsa-lab and CEA List. Subsequently OpenViBE has been developed further by several multi-year projects.

Today OpenViBE benefits from many contributors such as Inria Bordeaux, Inria Sophia-Antipolis, Inria Nancy, Ghent University and Mensia Technologies as well as a growing community interacting on the OpenViBE forums.
