Reusing an existing driver - which one to choose

Hello,
I am planning to develop a small acquisition device (fNIR device) and would like to interface it with Openvibe.
As the device doesn't exist yet, I am free to choose any protocol (over serial port).
Is there any preferred choice ? I was thinking in reusing OpenEEG protocol, as it would probably fit my needs, but if you think one is better suited (more capabilities, better design...) let me know.
The idea is to reuse the existing driver completely.
