Just an update on this, in case any future users encounter the same problem and stumble on this thread:

After much gnashing of teeth, we discovered drivers for v-amp tucked away in a quiet corner of the Brain Products Recorder and Analyzer installation CD, and installing these did the trick!

We have now tested whether the computer recognizes the amplifier, and it does not. So maybe it is Brain Vision we should be contacting instead.
